AFRO1021: Introduction to Africa

3 CreditsGlobal Perspectives

Africa is the birthplace of the human species, home to 54 countries and inhabited by diverse people with an estimated 2000 language spoken across the continent. Rather than seeing it as a place with a rich history and dynamic people, however, Africa is often viewed as the ?Dark Continent,? a place filled with war, disease, poverty and primitive people. The purpose of this class is to provide students with the tools to counter these existing stereotypes. As Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, said: ??the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.? The goal of this course is thus to offer a multiplicity of stories and in so doing, traverse the broad historical forces that have shaped human life across the African continent.
